Okay enough of the banned songs, for now. After mentioning The New York Dolls yesterday I had to come back with Johnny Thunders, David Johansen, Todd Rundgren et al. Man these glam rockers in the 70s were it in NYC. They were shock rockers back then with their drag and makeup. Their stage presence was well ahead of KISS. They never had any commercial success but they were uber important to the lets call it progressive rock scene. They were glam/punk/whatever rock. Yesterday I put their eponymous album cover up so I could go with Trash but I will go with Personality Crisis. Enjoy your weekend. Remember you can follow me by clicking on the blue follow button. Okay I am still going with banned songs because I want to. If you don't like it tough ti++y. This song came out in 1970 by an English band. It is about a tranny or crossdresser. Crazy shyt for back then. Couple of brothers in the band. Songs name is one word, just his/her name. Can you guess it? The band's brothers names are Davies. The bands name could have been thought of as sexual. Not getting it? Okay the Kinks with Lola. Pretty harmless song but for 1970 it is out there with Lou Reed's Take A Walk On The Wild Side. Glam Rock was just starting with T-Rex, David Bowie and The New York Dolls. Love the Dolls. Especially the album cover to their eponymous first album.
Anyways it is said that Ray's manager meet a tranny at a club in Paris. You can go from there. Welcome to the weekend. Lots of hits from yesterdays banned song. Here is another banned song from The Cure called Killing An Arab off their first US album from 1979 Boys Don't Cry and was their first single. It is based on 1942 novel by Camus called L'Etranger or in English The Stranger. It was banned by many radio stations and they put one of those parent advisor stickers that the PMRC and Tipper Gore wanted on the album. During the Gulf War and 9/11 it got more popular. In 2005 Robert Smith changed the lyrics to Kissing an Arab, in 2006 to Killing Another and for their 40th anniversary he switched it back to the original lyrics. I can't believe on a day of remembrance of the Holocaust I am hearing that a Tennessee school board is banning Art Spiegelman's Pulitzer Prize winning graphic novel Maus. This happened a couple of weeks ago but I am just hearing about this backwater school board in McMinn County. To read about that click here. I heard Mr Spiegelman speak and he said that McMinn County is only has 30 percent of its students reading at their grade level. Not sure if that is true but I bet so if you are banning Maus. I had 3 copies of that in my library as it was in and out so often. Pretty stupid if you ask me. Next you will be banning talking about slavery and eradicating the Native Americans. Oh wait they are doing that in Texas. Freaking Rednecks. So I thought to myself, "Self, what would be a good song for today. A song that was banned." I know Space Oddity has been banned but I posted The Flaming Lips version last month. So I decided on The Prodigy song Smack My Bitch Up which was banned from MTV. A great dance song with misogynistic lyrics for sure. I picked three videos (the most I have ever done). One that is just the song with somebody's video, a live version and somebody's South Park version. There is one that gives the history of the song but if I embed it then it is age restricted not sure why. If you click on this link it should work though. There is a 2021 remake video but it is a little too gory for even me but you can look up Patrick Cutler remake. Kirk Hammett said his guitar riff was inspired by Soundgarden. Enter Sandman comes from Metallica's album Metallica which came out in 91. I mentioned yesterday about Sinead O being on SNL. Well on Saturday I actually stayed up and watched SNL and the band was Maneskin. They were really good. They have opened for the Rolling Stones in sin city and Ed Sheeran in Paris. Anyways they played a great cover of Frankie Valley and the Four Seasons 67 song Beggin and later closed with I Wanna Be Your Slave. I will try and have both SNL versions for you eventually but they are not available in Canada as of today so I am taking each song from their twitter feed. Sorry each song is in two parts. That's twitter for you. Also below that are two non SNL versions of the the songs by these very young Italian Glam rockers. They are only in their very early twenties. After Meat Loaf's death I thought about another singer that is going through some troubling times. I called her Skin Head O'bootcamp back in the day and was not a fan of her music but when she ripped up the pic of the "pope" I respected her as I knew she just gave up her career. If you don't know who I am talking about it is Sinead O'Connor. I will give you a Nothing Compares To You as I definitely won't give you Mandinka. Please watch the second video as you definitely have not heard it and it shows why she is was probably one of the best voices to come out of Green Coast in my life. I hope she gets the help that she needs. No parent should bury their child. Ok here is another 70s rock band but not Canadian. Do you remember Tommy Shaw, James Young, Dennis DeYoung and the Panozzo brothers? You do. You are old. Lol. From the 78 Pieces of Eight album from Styx, I picked Blue Collar Man (Long Nights). I never owned this album but do still have Grand Illusion in gold vinyl. Well if yesterday was Triumph we have to come back with another Canadian Rock and Roll band from the 70s. Can you guess who it is? No not the Guess Who but that would of been really clever. No my wife did not pick this one. They toured with yesterdays band and the song that I am playing today is a sport anthem that you will hear in many NHL rinks especially after a fight. You know the song, "Raise A Little Hell". Can you think of the band now? Time is up. It's Trooper. With the Bat Out of Hell singer Meat Loaf passing I thought I would give him a tribute as he had the acting part of Eddie in my favourite 75 movie featuring Tim Curry and Susan Sarandan. The song I have picked is from the movie and is called Hot Patootie Bless My Soul which Eddie is presumably singing about his girlfriend Columbia. Movie tip for you. Eddie and Columbia are the only humans to die in the movie. Great movie. Oh yeah do you know what Meatloaf would not do in the song I Would Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That). He bet 100 bucks that people would not be stupid enough after listening to the song to ask. He then said he lost the money. He says right in the song "I'll never lie to you". Funny look at the lyric I quote in the Triumph song I posted earlier today. Welcome to the weekend. Looks like my wife is making more requests. Well musical requests anyways :) She would like to hear from the Canadian rock and roll band Triumph that I saw at the old Cleary Auditorium in Windsor way back in 79. “I don’t ask for much, the truth will do just fine” . Great lyrics. She would like to hear Lay It On The Line. Gotta love the hair and the 12 string guitar. I have posted Jack White's band here before with Seven Nation Army but my wife asked me to put up Fell In Love With A Girl so you know what? I may look dumb but I am not stupid so with no adieu here from an American garage punk band's third album from the early 2000s, the White Stripes. I saw the English post punk band Shriekback over at St. Andrews in D Town a couple of times in the early 80s for their Care and then their Oil and Gold tours. I am not sure about you but I really liked everything Trent Reznor did. Nine Inch Nails' first album Pretty Hate Machine I thought was great especially if you liked Industrial music of the late '80s. Made it back from Flo Rida but my son and I were "randomly selected" for a covid PCR test. Wasted a couple hours out of my evening last night waiting for the nurse online to make sure I did the test correctly. It won't be picked up until Monday afternoon and hopefully won't be lost like my friends son that has now been in quarantine for 8 days waiting his results that he won't get. Anyways enough of the rant I will give you a song that reached number 10 on the US charts in 1976 and was re-released by another band but featured the original band a decade later and went to number 4 on the US charts. It also resurrected the career of the original band as the original bands singer had spent a bunch of time in rehab. You know who they are, Tyler and Perry. No. Ok. Steven Tyler and Joe Perry from Aerosmith and the second band was Run DMC. Now you remember. My summary of Malcolm Gladwell's book What The Dog Saw is being done in three parts over three days. Here is my write up of the third part of his book.
Part Three
The fourteenth chapter is called Late Bloomers. It is about authors and painters that are not prodigious but must spend much of their career honing their craft. He uses Cezanne as an example.
Most Likely to Succeed is the fifteenth chapter and it discusses the hardship in selecting NFL quarterbacks based on their college history and that of selecting top notch teachers. I think they are both similar. Wink. Wink.
The sixteenth chapter is called Dangerous Minds and deals with trying to identify serial killers by the crime scene or notes that are sent to the authorities.
The Talent Myth is the seventeenth chapter. It deals with highly touted MBA’s from top end business schools like Wharton. It focussed a bit on Enron too.
The eighteenth chapter The New-Boy Network asks the question “What do job interviews really tell us?” We it comes right down to it, if it is a classical interview the first 15 seconds are all that matters. First impressions are everything. After that your answers will confirm the interviewers initial thoughts pretty much no matter what. Speak clearly and smile. 😀
Today's song came out when I was in grade 9 back in 1979 and was from the one hit wonder band from New Zealand, Split Enz. The song is I Got You. I am leaving Flo Rida and hopeful I will bring some warm weather north with me. My summary of Malcolm Gladwell's book What The Dog Saw is being done in three parts over three days. Here is my write up of the second part of his book.
Part Two
The seventh chapter deals with the now defunct energy company, Enron. It details how almost all of the info needed to to know it was vulnerable financially were in its quarterly filings but there was just lots and lots of minutia to sift through. It was hidden in plane site.
The eighth chapter is called Million - Dollar Murray. Many things in behavioral science obey a Gaussian Distribution or bell curve. For example in first year psych most students will be fairly near the average with less near the extremes, zero and perfect. This chapter deals with behavior where the outliers might still might be extreme but cause most of the problems and Gladwell calls this Power Law distribution. He uses examples of homelessness. Of all the homeless people in Reno only a handful are in the hospital so much (due to severe inebriation) that their public funded yearly hospital bill is close to 100k. This is staggering considering this is a 15 year old book. He suggests that just helping out these chronics would save the tax payers millions. He uses another example of car emissions in Denver where a small percentage of cars produce most of the toxic emissions yet all older cars are subject to testing. Again just going after the outliers with technology would solve the problem. He also talks about this with the policing issues with the LAPD. A great chapter. “ power law solutions have a little appeal to the right, because they have all special treatment for people who do not deserve special treatment and have little appeal to the left, because their emphasis on efficiency over fairness suggest the cold number crunching of Chicago school cost benefit analysis. Even the promise of millions of dollars in savings or cleaner air or better police departments cannot entirely compensate for such discomfort.”
The ninth chapter is called the picture problem. It had much to do with WW 2 photo recon, the Gulf War Satellite recon and mammogram and mammography.
The tenth chapter is called Something Borrowed and deals with plagiarism and intellectual property rights. A play on Broadway actually used some of Gladwell’s work and he was not accredited with it. There is mention of music such as Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit and the guitar lick from Boston’s More Than a Feeling.
The eleventh chapter dealt with intelligence reform such as after 9/11 or other bombings . In retrospect if you just look at selected evidence it is easy to say why couldn’t intelligence agencies just connect the dots but it is never that easy as there is always so much noise.
The twelfth chapter is called The Art of Failure. It deals with the difference between choking and panicking. It concludes with Greg Norman’s epic choke to Nick Faldo at the 96 Masters.
Blowup is the thirteenth chapter and mostly deals with the Challenger explosion of 1986 and a bit of the Three Mile Island near nuclear meltdown of 1979. He brings up that “ under certain circumstances, changes that appear to make a system or an organization safer in fact don’t. Why? Because human beings have fundamental tendency to compensate for less risk in one area by taking greater risk in another.” He gives as examples that more people get hit by cars crossing the street at cross walks than not because we let down our guard there. Similarly when childproof lids were put on medicine bottles, it lead to increased child poisoning because people became less vigilant about keeping pill bottles out of the reach of kids.
I saw the RHCP when I was in first year U back in 84-85 during their Freaky Stylie tour. Full socks on c@cks. I am picking Suck My Kiss for song of the day. Enjoy your weekend. I love all of Malcolm Gladwell’s books that I have read. I previously blogged about his book The Tipping Point. Anyways, What The Dog Saw is a collection of 19 stories that he published while working at The New Yorker. The book is divided into three parts and I will do my write-up over three days. One for each part.
Part One - Is titled Obsessives, Pioneers and Other Varieties of Minor Geniuses
The first chapter is about Ron Popeil of Ronco. If you an old fart like me you remember his commercials for the Electric Food Dehydrator, the Showtime Rotisserie, Veg-O-Matic and the Pocket Fisherman to name a few. He just talks about Ron’s ability to pitch an item.
The second chapter was about Ketchup. Why is it only really Heinz? At one time mustard was only French and it was strictly yellow until Grey Poupon came along. In spaghetti sauce it was only really Ragu until Cambells came up with Prego extra chunky and a variety of others. Not in ketchup though.
The third chapter is about a fund manager from Empirical Capital, Nassim Taleb who has a different way of looking at options trading. He has a few “quants” working for him. They are like financial mathematicians. His algorithm basically favours a large probability of losing a small amount of money everyday against a small probability of making a boat load of money when things like 9/11 happen or COVID hits.
The fourth chapter is about hair dye and the hidden history of postwar America. Shirley Polykoff, a part Ukrainian of Jewish faith was a copywriter who came up with “Does she or doesn’t she” for Clairol. In the 70s Ilon Specht as copywriter came up with “Because I’m worth it” for L’Oreal. There was much interesting talk about product psychology.
The fifth chapter dealt with the development of the birth control pill. There was discussion of how women at the beginning of the 19th century rarely menstruated because of having children so early versus now and how this has effected the rate of ovarian and breast cancer.
The sixth chapter gave the book its title. Cesar Millan owns the Dog Psychology Center in South-Central LA. He is from Tijuana. He has the ability to understand and help with dogs that have violence issues. They even had a show on tv called The Dog Whisper about him.
